Matrix
What is Matrix?
Matrix is an open, decentralised chat protocol. Think of it like email: there’s no single company running everything: anyone can host their own server, and servers talk to each other. You pick a client (the app you use) and a homeserver (the server your account lives on), and you can still talk to people on other servers.
Our homeserver is mx.gngg.eu. Any Matrix client can connect to it.
Suitable clients
You don’t need to install anything to start. The quickest way in is through a web client. Here are some options:
| Client | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cinny | Web | Modern, clean web client. |
| Element | Web / Desktop / Mobile | The de facto official client. |
| SchildiChat | Mobile (Android) | A friendlier fork of Element. |
| FluffyChat | Mobile | Simple. |
| Thunderbird | Desktop | Can do Matrix since v115. |
Element Web works in any browser with no setup, just point it at our server.
How to log in
- Open your chosen client.
- Instead of using the default server (usually matrix.org), enter our homeserver address: mx.gngg.eu
- If you already have an account, sign in. If not, register a new account on our server.
- Join the room: #general:mx.gngg.eu
That’s it. Once you’re in, you’ll see the conversation.
